Is It Friday Already?!
Still swamped in the kitchen, cooking for the baby shower my sister is throwing.
The desserts above are just what my sister and I finished today... and I still have more to do...
I had to change the plan a little. My sister wanted a hot pink/light pink for the baby shower's theme. That looks fine on cookies, but hot pink fondant cakes have one of two color incarnations: Pepto-Bismol and such a hot pink you have to shield your eyes. I really don't want to end up on cake wrecks so I talked her into dusty rose/light pink combination for the fondant decorated treats.
The cupcakes are vanilla or raspberry pink velvet cake. The fondant topped cupcakes--which I made only a few of because I do dislike fondant topped cupcakes, even if they are adorable--have raspberry Swiss meringue buttercream under their caps and the rest are standard buttercream.
The little cake's exterior is nearly as pretty as the interior (well I hope), which I can't show you as I'm not permitted to cut into cakes I bake for others (boo!). Layers of pink and ivory cake, sandwiched with pale pink raspberry Swiss meringue butter cream and seedless raspberry preserves.
Now I'm off to work on the appetizers and savory snacks!

Beautiful! I'll bet they taste as good as they look. Sooo...your sister is having a girl? Congrats to her! Hope to see what the cake looks like inside when you get to cut it!
ReplyDelete:o)
These are spectacular! I'd love to see photos of the inside of the cakes when you are allowed to cut them!
ReplyDeleteTake pictures once it's cut? Those layers seem lovely in your description!
ReplyDeleteLOVE those cupcake toppings, they look like rose petals!!! OMG how beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAmazing looking! Hope that sister of yours knows how amazingly awesome you are!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually not going to the shower, so I'm won't see the little 6" cake cut. I'm just the cook/baker.
ReplyDeleteI should note sister isn't having the baby, she is just the friend of the mom-to-be and hosting the shower.
Patrick,
My sister, in her typical fashion, insists she is "awesome too".
So pretty and cute!!!! Good luck and I hope it goes well!
ReplyDeleteYou WILL be getting your grubby mitts on a photo of the layered cake taken by someone else though, right? Right?! Please say you will. I love multi-coloured layered cakes very very much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely spread for the shower. It's like a baby shower in a fairy tale.
ReplyDeleteOooh, what a gorgeous spread! Will you be at the shower to take pictures of the cut cake? I'd love to see the inside!
ReplyDeleteOh, how beautiful! I particularly love the frilly effect of the piped frosting on the cupcakes. Which tip did you use to achieve the effect?
ReplyDeleteHappy bakin'!
I meant to say that the question was directed at the dusty pink cupcakes! :D
ReplyDeleteSister of Natalie... I am the other person hosting this baby shower and I am IN LOVE with all of this. You are truly amazing!!!!!! I promise to take a pic(s) of the inside of the cake once it is cut! Thank you SO much for helping us out with this! I am sooo excited to try everything! I have tasted cupcakes before of yours and I have to say... AMAZING! :)
ReplyDeleteChocoholiclily,
ReplyDeleteThe ruffled rose cupcakes are topped with a large drop flower tip (1G).
Kristen,
Thanks. I do hope everything turns out nicely tomorrow.
You all are my guinea pigs for a completely new and untested Swiss meringue buttercream recipe. It may or may not be poisonous. We shall see, right?
Wow, truly a work of art, and absolutely adorable. I esp love that cake, it is just perfection! Will you post a slice of it after the party?
ReplyDeleteeverything looks so yummy!
ReplyDeletethe fondant cake is a beautiful vision…
this truly will be a very elegant baby shower…lucky mom-to-be!
wow!
i hope you post photos of your spectacular savory & sweet treats!
I am more then happy to be a guinea pig!! SO excited! Again, THANK YOU so much for your help!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!
ReplyDeleteeverything looks fabulous......trying to imagine what hot pink/light pink appetizers you will be making!!!
ReplyDeleteNo pink appetizers I'm afraid. I had to draw the line somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered, how do you slice a fondant covered cake? Do you remove the fondant first or do you cut right through it?
ReplyDeleteThese ALL tasted AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! So did the appetizers! YUM. I probably gained 10 lbs yesterday! THANK YOU again so much for your help! EVERYONE loved everything!!! :)
ReplyDeleteMarzipan,
ReplyDeleteI always cut and serve the cake with the fondant still on. The presentation is better that way. Then folks can either eat around it or remove it.
I also leave it because there is occasionally a person at the gathering who actually likes to eat fondant. Far be it for me to deprive someone of their ultimate sugar rush.
Kristen,
Good to hear it!
Could you tell me what kind of pan you used to make the little cake. I am making cupcakes for a bon voyage party next month and would love to make the small cake also!
ReplyDeleteMiss Adventures,
ReplyDeleteThese are the 6" cake pans I use in my kitchen: (link).
Ms. Humble, I do believe that your sister ate the fondant! :)
ReplyDeleteWANT the raspberry frosting recipe. WANT. Please??? :)
ReplyDeleteoh everything looks soo pretty. we are planning a baby shower for one of our co-workers and would love any of these recipes! PLEASE?!? =)
ReplyDeletebeautiful!
ReplyDeletegigg1es,
ReplyDeleteThe recipes/instructions for all that would be really long to type out here. However, you can find the cookie recipe--along with a link to the icing--posted on the blog last month.
If you're looking to turn out cute cakes and cupcakes, I suggest you buy, borrow, or go to your local library and request these books:
For cake and cupcakes, I recommend both of Rose's two books The Cake Bible and Rose's Heavenly Cakes. Take Rose's red velvet and modify it with a pink coloring and some bakery raspberry flavoring, you've got a pink cupcake with a fruity-vanilla flavor.
For styling and working with fondant, Confetti Cakes is a great book. Though I urge caution with using their recipes (at least with the current edition, there are many errors).
Other good books: Martha's Cupcakes for classic cupcake styling and Hello, Cupcake for some really fun designs.
